How Murphy Homeowners Can Prevent Ants
Ants are one of the most common pests that Murphy homeowners are likely to find either inside their homes or around their properties. While some are simply a nuisance, others can be more of a threat, like fire ants or carpenter ants. In order to keep a wide array of ant species away, homeowners ought to try these tips:
- Be smart with trash. Food is one of the most exciting things for ants; it’s what they look for. A key place where they find food is in recycling bins and garbage. Before disposing of jars, rinse them thoroughly. Always line bins with bags and don’t let trash accumulate, especially if it contains decomposing food.
- Never ignore a leak. Water sources are also largely responsible for attracting ants. Check pipes, plumbing, and other fixtures and address any leaks or drips. Keeping gutters free from build-up is also a key step.
- Make cleaning a habit. Homeowners can further reduce potential food sources by tidying up on a regular basis. Clean stovetops, counters, floors, showers, sinks, ovens, and sink drains to eliminate any potential food residue.
- Pay attention to the outside. Some ants live primarily outdoors, so it’s important to clear away yard debris that might attract them. Additionally, clean up grills after using them and patch up holes in driveways.
- Store all food items securely. Whether it’s pet food, leftovers, or snacks in the pantry, keep food in sealed containers instead of their original packaging.

Why Cockroaches In Murphy Homes Need Professional Treatment To Remove
The cockroaches that appear inside Murphy homes can be potentially harmful to have present. They are associated with the spread of health risks such as staphylococcus and a variety of gastrointestinal distresses. While people might think that crushing individual roaches is an effective form of eliminating them, a roach problem actually requires professional attention. Here are a few reasons why:
- Infestations can be tough to locate and large. Cockroaches often live in areas of the home that people do not access often. Sometimes that’s in the far reaches of cupboards, while other times it’s behind the pipes under a sink. Because they are also nocturnal, homeowners rarely know the extent of their infestation. Cockroaches can also lay one egg sac a month for ten months, each containing approximately 16 eggs, so infestations are often quite large too.
- Simply touching roaches can be dangerous. Some of the bacteria and pathogens that cockroaches spread come directly from their skin and shed body parts. A pest professional will have the right equipment to avoid contracting any health issues, while a homeowner might expose themselves to risks unknowingly.
- They can go without for long periods of time. Cockroaches are capable of living for a month without food and a week without water. They are sturdy pests that can withstand a lot, which means that if a home offers the promise of sustenance, they are unlikely to leave it.
- Some cockroaches don’t respond to typical treatments. One of the most common types of cockroach, the German cockroach, has been developing an immunity to traditional treatments. They are notoriously stubborn and difficult to eliminate, sometimes requiring fumigation or repeat services that only a professional can provide.

How To Minimize Mosquitoes Buzzing Around Your Murphy Property
When you live in Murphy, spending time outdoors in the summertime can be made challenging thanks to the pesky mosquitoes that are always buzzing around trying to bite you. If you’re looking to limit the number of mosquitoes that you see on your property, try the following tips:
- Start with stagnant water. Mosquitoes thrive in moist conditions and they need water sources to lay their eggs. Places like bird baths, flower pots, buckets, tires, playsets, and pool covers may all collect water, so it’s important to clear them out regularly. And if you keep any pet bowls outdoors, make sure to turn over that water routinely as well.
- Address human factors. Female mosquitoes are searching for people to bite, and while there are characteristics like blood type that you can’t change, there are things you can do to make yourself less appealing. To start, skip wearing perfume or using scented personal products. You’ll also want to wear light-colored clothing, drink less alcohol, and try to sweat less.
- Keep landscaping trimmed. You can also reduce the number of hiding sites you have by mowing your lawn to a short height, clearing away brush and debris, and pruning hedges.
- Enlist professional services. The most effective way to experience fewer mosquitoes around your home is by receiving seasonal mosquito treatments from a trusted professional. This will create a barrier of protection and address sources of standing water to curb larvae and adult populations.

Learn More About Murphy, TX
Attracted by the offer of land grants from the Peters colony, the community's first settlers arrived in the area in 1846. The original townsite, located on land owned by C. A. McMillen, was first called "Old Decator," after McMillen's hometown, and later, "Maxwell's Branch." When the Southwestern Railway reached the area in 1888, the residents renamed the town "Murphy" in honor of William Murphy, who provided land for the tracks and the construction of a depot. A post office was established there in 1891. From the 1880s until the 1950s, Murphy served as a shipping point for area farmers and stock raisers. The Great Depression, the mechanization of farming, and job opportunities in the outer metropolitan area contributed to a decline in the population of Murphy. Though the rural community was never very large, its population was reduced to 150 by the mid-1950s and 135 by 1961. Mail service was discontinued in 1954. Today, Murphy is home to landmarks such as the Tom Kimbrough Stadium.
